Instructions for Door Painting in Detail

Take Off the Door

The initial step is to remove the door from its hinges.

Close the door and use a hammer and nail to loosen the hinge pin. Tap the hinge with a screwdriver with a flat head until it can be removed. Crack the door open and gently pull it to the side to disengage it from the hinges.

Remove Door Fittings

Utilize a screwdriver to unscrew and remove all the hardware, including the doorknob assembly and hinges. Keep everything in a box or container for subsequent reinstallation.

Dust the Door

Sand the door's whole surface using the sanding block or electric sander. The purpose of sanding is to remove the shiny top layer of finish and to smooth the door's surface. Dust off the surface with a clean rag.

Perform Edge Work

Utilize the paintbrush to begin painting the door's edges. Beginning at the inside edge of the hinge, move clockwise around the door from the header to the striker side to the bottom.

Decorate the Door

Paint the door surface with the little roller by rolling it up the door's height. After extending three to four widths with the roller, use the brush dipped in a small amount of paint to complete and smooth roller lines. Repeat until the entire door face is coated with paint, then allow to dry. After the door has dried, flip it over and repeat these steps on the opposite side.

Reinstall Door Hardware

Utilize the screwdriver to reinstall the door's hinges and doorknob assembly.

Install the Door

If necessary, align the hinge leaves with a pry bar before reinstalling the door on the hinges. Reposition the hinge pin and tap it home with a hammer.

Yes! It is possible to paint over paint that is lead-based; however, not just with any type of paint. Painting over paint that contains lead or encapsulation is a highly efficient method for removing lead paint. Encapsulation is cheaper than removing lead paint and is actually safer as it does not release dust or lead into the atmosphere.
